1999/2000 Coalition Accomplishments:
- The 2000 legislative session (mid-January to mid-February) was supposed to only deal with the state budget and any issues the Governor put on his call list. However, conservative legislators placed another DOMA bill on the agenda and the Rules Committee allowed it to pass into the Senate. We were able to stop this legislation in the Senate Judiciary Committee and for the first time we had two senators vote to stop a DOMA bill in the Public Affairs Committee (previously they had only voted to table it). This is a success for us and a good sign that we making progress in the legislature.
- The Coalition was in an incredible state of growth and activity during the past year. Our organizational membership increased by 63% in 1998 to 19 organizations, and by 84% in 1999 to 35 organizations. Thus far in 2000, we have grown to 37 organizations. This growth is largely due to the efforts of the regional representatives serving on the steering committee..
