Coalition History:The Coalition was founded on May 2,1993, in the aftermath of the second defeat of legislation designed to amend the New Mexico Human Rights Act to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation (then known as Senate Bill 91, now known as the New Mexico Non-Discrimination Act or NM-NDA). The intent of the Coalition was to create a shared statewide vision for gay and lesbian civil/human rights and to provide a unified political voice for New Mexico's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (GLBT) communities.
From the outset of the Coalition's formation, it has been clear to the Steering Committee (board) that civil and human rights for New Mexico's GLBT community cannot be obtained without the active participation of rural, working class and ethnic GLBT communities. Anti-GLBT sentiment, press, and violence happen in all environments and must be addressed within those environment of origin, and statewide. Supportive legislation will not pass or anti-legislation fail, if rural legislators do not hear from their GLBT and allied constituents. Any legal, legislative or policy protections which include the GLBT community are hollow if members of the GLBT community do not know of these laws, do not understand them, or are still afraid to come forward to receive protection.
