1999/2000 Coalition Accomplishments:
-
During the 1999 State legislative session (mid-January to mid-March, 1999) we, in collaboration with many other groups, were able to get the legislature to pass a hate crimes bill. Unfortunately the governor vetoed it (for the second time). We introduced a bill to add sexual orientation to the state's anti-discrimination laws covering jobs, housing and public accommodations. It made it through two House committees, but lost on the floor of the House. This is the first time this legislation was heard and discussed by the full House. We successfully stopped two anti-same gender marriage bills in committees and were able to stop the introduction of legislation which would have authorized an initiative for the 2000 general election to change the state constitution to define marriage as a union between one-man and one-woman.
