New Mexico Profile:New Mexico is a very large, yet sparsely populated state, with a population of 1.5 million people. The state ranks 46th in per capita income and includes some of the poorest counties in the nation. New Mexico is a multicultural, multilingual stateÑthe Hispanic community constitutes the largest minority group (40% of the population) with many residents being able to trace their families back to the original 18th century Spanish settlers. New Mexico is also home to 22 sovereign Indian Nations whose membership composes 3% of the population. The African American community is also 3% of the state's population.
The areas with the most organized GLBT political voice are in the south/north corridor of Albuquerque and Santa Fe, primarily due to the fact that more out gay people live in these cities than in the rest of the state. The remainder of the northern parts of the state are composed of small, rural towns and villages, primarily Hispanic and Native American. The southern reaches of the state are also small, rural communities with primarily Anglo and Chicano populations. The small size and isolation of many communities means gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people have not been identified to even begin dialogue about the political climate in many New Mexican towns.
